Sarah Michelle Gellar is slaying a different kind of beast these days: hunger.

The star co-founded Foodstirs, a company that makes kid-friendly baking kits and mixes with and eye toward sustainable and clean ingredients.

“We think that all food comes from Instacart,” says Gellar. “You press a button and it gets delivered. I like going back and thinking about what goes into that.”

Foodstirs recently expanded its line to mug cake and chewy oat bar mixes, available online and at many grocery stores.

Read on to find out why Gellar kicked off Foodstirs—and how her Buffy role helped get it started.

What’s the story behind Foodstirs?

As a working parent, I was always looking for activities that could really engage my child where we create memories and it wasn’t screen-time or going to the movies. It was right in that phase where all of the baking championships and all the food shows were popular. I went on Pinterest and I looked at some of these recipes and was so overwhelmed. We went to the supermarket to get a mix, hoping that it would be easier, and we were kind of shocked to find that when you look at a grocery store, the perimeter is so modernized—it’s organic, it’s all natural and non-GMO and fair trade and all these things. When you get in the center aisle, it’s still those brands that were around when my mom was a kid with the same ingredients. We decided it’s a really great opportunity, selfishly, because it was something that we wanted. And then we realized it wasn’t just about parents. Life is hard and you want to be able to indulge, and you want to indulge in the best possible way.

First things first, he has told The Hollywood Reporter that he will be executive producing a reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, with the lead character set to be played by a black actress.

The new show is set to “build on the mythology of the original. Like today’s world, the new Buffy will be richly diverse, with some aspects of the series, like the flagship, seen as metaphors for issues facing society today”, but Whedon will apparently not be involved in the writing or directing process, because…

His second project is a brand new property, titled The Nevers, which is set to air on HBO, which is described as “as an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that might change the world.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar On How To Slay A Seven-Billion-Dollar Industry
By Michelle King

Sarah Michelle Gellar is a Golden Globe nominee and Emmy award winning actress, who has gone from starring in Buffy to co-founding the food company Foodstirs.

Gellar is taking on a seven-billion-dollar baking-mix and prepared-foods industry with co-founders Galit Laibow, and Greg Fleishman. “I was really excited about what that change could be and what I would be capable of and what I could push myself to do,” she says.

Foodstirs sells organic and GMO-free baking mixes and kits. Since launching in October 2015, the products have sold in more than 15,000 stores in the United States. This includes retailers like Whole Foods Market, Kroger, Target and soon Starbucks.

Gellar says the career change has been a steep learning curve. “People think that doing a television show is hard. Well try having a business. It is twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week. It never stops,” says Gellar. In this interview, Gellar shares the secrets to her success and why failing is such an important part of building a business.

Michelle King: How did you get started?

Sarah Michelle Gellar: All of our kids were really enthralled with these baking shows, which were targeting a younger generation. When we wanted to make these products with our children, we were very surprised at the lack of options in the baking category. All we could find were these old legacy brands that were filled with chemicals and ingredients that nobody wanted to see anymore.

When we started to research the category, we saw that it was a seven-billion-dollar category that was being dominated by these older brands that had an 80 percent market share. We thought that was interesting because as a consumer we know what people are looking for. We decided to take the leap and try it.

“I need to make a decision on this,” says Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Her two co-founders, Galit Laibow and Greg Fleishman, stop chatting and join in. It’s mid-November, and they’re standing in the center of their Los Angeles startup office: a converted garage half a block from a pot dispensary, with two rows of desks in the back, a shared office-slash-conference room for the co-founders up front and the words what’s up batches?! towering above a kitchen in the middle. This is Foodstirs, their baking-mix company, and in a week’s time, Gellar is going to be on Harry Connick Jr.’s show, Harry, promoting their products by baking…something. But what? That’s the decision.

The next minute is rapid-fire: The trio seem to seek consensus largely by talking over each other, excitedly and animatedly, as if advancing a collective thought.

Gellar: “I think we have to do gingerbread –”

Fleishman: “It’s the presell into Christmas –”

Laibow: “So gingerbread and –”

OK; go ahead and say it: Celebrity-endorsed baking mixes? This is a company worth taking seriously? It wouldn’t be the first time people dismissed or insulted Foodstirs — even to the founders’ faces. Foodstirs was dissed by countless investors. Retailers. Suppliers. Gellar found that some industry types pooh-poohed the company because of her involvement in it. (In case her identity needs explaining: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Cruel Intentions. Ask anyone alive in the ’90s.) “If we took no for an answer, this company wouldn’t have existed,” says Laibow, the company’s CEO. “They’d say, ‘Cute little baking brand! Oh, that’s great. Not for us.’ ”
